Sept 2025 – Edinboro University’s track & field and cross country programs are on the rise under head coach Taylor Cudequest, who took the helm in 2024. In just one year, the Fighting Scots broke nine school records, crowned three PSAC champions, and earned an All-American. Coach Cudequest is focused on building a nationally competitive Division II program while also developing well-rounded student-athletes. With a culture rooted in teamwork, academics, and growth beyond sport, Edinboro is quickly becoming a program to watch in the PSAC and NCAA.
Set less than half an hour from Lake Erie, PennWest Edinboro offers stunning views and the perfect setting for one of the fastest-rising NCAA Division II track & field programs in the country. With the cross country season just getting underway, head coach Taylor Cudequest has high hopes for the Fighting Scots.
Having taken over as head coach of track and field in May 2024, Coach Cudequest has already seen immediate success, and he’s hungry for more in the years to come.
“We had a great first year, and broke nine school records. We got three PSAC champions and an All-American in our first year,” says Coach Cudequest. “I definitely want the girls to do a little better at conference, hoping we can squeeze in a top-two finish this year for the ladies. I’d also like to send a couple more kids to [D-II] Nationals this year. We got one this year, but I’m hoping to get at least three or four.”
Building a Contender
The program has continued to grow in both size and strength. With this momentum, Coach Cudequest has his sights set on transforming Edinboro into a consistent Division II powerhouse.
“I think I see Edinboro as a potential top Division II national qualifying team. I want us to be one of the top academic schools in the country as well, raising that GPA up overall for the whole team. I would like to be regarded or renowned as one of the top multi-programs in the country in Division II,” said Coach Cudequest. “So for the decathlon, heptathlon, that means dominating those. That’s definitely a goal of mine. That and just keep developing the family and show what Edinboro is like; that we are the Fighting Scots.”
Experience That Elevates
As a former high-level multi-event athlete, Coach Cudequest brings firsthand experience and insight that his athletes can lean on.
“I understand what it takes to get to that level. The work you put in, you make a lot of sacrifices… you gotta kind of lock in and take care of your body,” he explained. “It’s important to know how to properly calm people down and say, ‘hey, I’ve been here before. I understand what it feels like to be here.’”
Developing Athletes Beyond the Track
While winning is a central goal, Coach Cudequest is equally focused on shaping his athletes into well-rounded individuals.
“I think that I want them to develop into the best possible person in their time here. So it’s very important to find yourself and figure out what kind of person you are,” he said. “And I just think the more you find yourself, becoming an adult is the goal. We want them to eventually leave being like, ‘I’m a young adult now. I kind of understand how life works and I’m ready for the next challenge in life. Whatever it is.’ So I feel like the most important thing is developing them into fine young adults who are ready to conquer the next challenges.”

Team Culture and Camaraderie
The Fighting Scots’ environment is built on success and strong morale. Beyond training and competition, the athletes make time for fun traditions that strengthen their bond.
“For Halloween we did a pumpkin carving contest as a team. That was fun. We did a lot of team bonding. After Christmas, we did a little Secret Santa amongst the team,” said Coach Cudequest.
