Disco Time made short work of his seven mostly overmatched foes in Friday's $250,000 St. Louis Derby presented by FanDuel Sportsbook at Fairmount Park in Collinsville, Ill., going straight to the front under Florent Geroux, controlling the pace and winning by 5 1/2 lengths. Trained by Brad Cox for owner-breeder Juddmonte Farm, the Kentucky-bred colt was winning for the fourth time without a defeat. He was making his first start since winning the Grade 3 Lecomte Stakes Jan. 18 at Fair Grounds, after which he went to the sidelines with what Cox called a "little setback."
Hypnus rallied up the rail to get second for trainer Kenny McPeek and jockey Colby Hernandez, with Bill Mott-trained Excite finishing third under Junior Alvarado, 2 1/2 lengths behind the runner-up.
They were followed by Mickswagger, Spellmaker, Extradition, Smoken Boy, and Dune a Vetta – the latter beaten a total of 78 3/4 lengths. Dune a Vetta, owned and trained by Wesley Cook, is a North Dakota-bred whose only previous start came in a maiden race at Oaklawn in December 2024 when defeated 28 1/2 lengths. He was sent off at 185-1 odds.
Disco Time covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.67 on a fast track after setting fractions of :23.87, :47.42, 1:11.51, and 1:37.13. Produced from the stakes-winning Pennsylvania-bred mare Disco Chick, a daughter of Jump Start, Disco Time paid $4 as the heavy favorite.
Disco Time won his debut last Nov. 1 at Churchill Downs, drawing off by 3 3/4 lengths in seven-furlong maiden contest. He came back Nov. 30 to win an allowance/optional claiming race by 3 1/2 lengths, then defeated Built by a neck on a sloppy track in the Jan. 18 Lecomte, rallying from more than 10 lengths back. He returned to the work tab July 5 and had 10 breezes before the St. Louis Derby.
The St. Louis Derby was staged on the 100th anniversary of Fairmount Park, located in downstate Illinois and just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis. The track most recently was named FanDuel Racing and Sportsbook but reverted to its original name when sold last year to Accel Entertainment, which opened the first Illinois racetrack casino in a temporary facility earlier this year.
Handle on the eight-race program was $1,573,039, according to Equibase, a significant increase from 2024, when the St. Louis Derby was held on a Saturday in August. Handle on the 10-race program for the 2024 St. Louis Derby was $944,198.
