HADLEY, Mass. – After recording two goals and one assist during a 2-0 NESCAC weekend, first-year forward Jake McManus of the Williams College men’s ice hockey team earned NESCAC Player of the Week laurels Monday from the conference office.
“Jake has adjusted very well to Williams and college hockey,” said head coach Bill Kangas. “He has been an impact player and person on our team.”
This weekly conference honor is the first of McManus’ collegiate career. The Winthrop, Massachusetts, native ranks first on the team in goals (7), assists (10) and points (17). His assist total is tied for the eighth most in the NESCAC and the goals are tied for 10th best.
The Ephs defeated Connecticut College, 5-3, on Friday evening at Lansing Chapman Rink behind a trio of first-period goals, and then outlasted visiting Tufts, 3-2, in overtime Saturday afternoon.
With the victories, the Ephs (8-8-2, 5-6-1 NESCAC) currently sit at fifth in the NESCAC standings, only one point out of third place. The top-eight teams qualify for the NESCAC Tournament and the top four receive home-ice advantage in the quarterfinal round on Saturday, March 1.
“I am honored to win NESCAC Player of the Week,” said McManus. “This weekend was a big step forward for our team as a group. Everybody played an important role in both games, which allowed us to get two huge conference wins. This weekend was alumni weekend, so it was really cool to have a sweep with the former Ephs in town watching.”
During the win over the Camels Friday, McManus recorded one goal and one assist. He buried the game-winning goal 21 seconds into overtime on a 4-on-3 power play against the Jumbos, as the Ephs secured 5-of-6 NESCAC points over the weekend. McManus has recorded at least one point in 12-of-18 games during the 2024-25 season.
“On Friday, we came out hot and were able to withstand Connecticut College’s pressure at the end of the game,” said McManus. “On Saturday, we showed how resilient we are as a team. Within a minute of giving up each goal, we came right back down and scored to tie the game back up. It was great to finish the game with a power-play goal, as we have been working on it a lot recently.”
Williams has six NESCAC games remaining on the schedule. The unit is giving its full attention to a 7 p.m. game at Wesleyan on Friday in Middletown, Connecticut.
