WORCESTER, Mass. – The Connecticut College men’s swimming and diving team fell by a 157-139 final against Division I Holy Cross on Sunday afternoon at Hart Center Arena.
Evan Lyons (Longmeadow, Mass.), Jack Mattison-Gulotta (Florence, Mass.), and Carrick Shea (Grafton, Mass.) each contributed a pair of wins on the day. The Camels finished with eight total wins in the swimming events—including four 1-2 finishes—as Tyler Choedak (Austin, Texas) and Nicholas Holovacs (Hingham, Mass.) chipped in solo victories.
Lyons opened the meet with a strong swim in the 1,000 free (9:42.83), winning by nearly 17 seconds to get the Camels off to a good start. He later clipped teammate Ryan Karaca (Schenectady, N.Y.) by seven-tenths of a second in the 400 IM (4:11.20), although the Conn duo finished more than seven seconds ahead of the nearest Holy Cross swimmer.
Shea was victorious in both the 100 breast (57.97) and 200 breast (2:09.99). He won the former by over a second and took the latter by more than four.
Mattison-Gulotta bested teammates to win both of his events. He finished a half-second ahead of Lyons to claim the 500 free (4:49.91) and touched the wall just over a second ahead of Stepan Ignatiev (Swampscott, Mass.) in the 200 fly (1:55.41).
Choedak’s win came in the 100 back (53.24) where he out-touched Matthew Morris (Alexandria, Va.) at the finish. Holovacs took the win in the 50 free (21.67) and finished just one-hundredth of a second off his season-best time.
The Camels posted several other runner-up finishes. Cam Bizjak (Willoughby, Ohio) took second in both the 1M and 3M dives, and Holovacs came up a half-second short in the 100 free. Morris finished ahead of Choedak in the 200 back but couldn’t catch Holy Cross’s Jack Greiner.
Conn will next compete at Wheaton College on Friday, January 31 at 7:00 p.m.
