NEW LONDON, Conn. – Competing for the second time in three days, the Connecticut College men’s swimming and diving team coasted to a 201-93 victory over Colby College on Monday afternoon in the first home meet of the season at Lott Natatorium.
The Camels dominated the day, winning 13 of 16 events to improve to 4-2 overall this season in dual meets. Justin Finkel (Cheshire, Conn.) won three events and also contributed to a relay victory to set the tone, and Evan Lyons (Longmeadow, Mass.), Jack Mattison-Gulotta (Florence, Mass.), Carrick Shea (Grafton, Mass.) and Cam Bizjak (Willoughby, Ohio) all added two wins apiece.
Conn opened the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay behind the team of Tyler Choedak (Austin, Texas), Shea, Nicholas Holovacs (Hingham, Mass.) and Finkel. The Camels and Mules were neck and neck heading into the final leg, but Finkel built a small buffer over the final 50 as the squad posted a time of 1:33.99.
Finkel’s success carried over into the individual events, where he secured a team-high 27 points. He sprinted to wins in the 50 free (20.76) and 100 free (46.87) before finishing his day with a strong swim in the 100 fly (50.89).
The Camels were impressive in the distance events, capturing the top three spots in both the 500 and 1,000 free. Mattison-Gulotta (4:45.51) turned in the fastest time in the 500 free ahead of Ian Sullivan (Naples, Fla.) and Cooper Voss (Glen Ridge, N.J.), and Lyons (9:46.21) touched the wall first in the 1,000 free to best Sullivan and Mattison-Gulotta.
Lyons added his second win in the 200 IM (1:57.34)—another 1-2-3 Conn finish that featured Ryan Karaca (Schenectady, N.Y.) and Shea—while Mattison-Gulotta followed suit in the 200 fly (1:53.87). Shea was victorious in both the 100 breast (56.99) and 200 breast (2:07.58), and Aiden Miller (Westfield, N.J.) claimed the win in the 200 free (1:43.25).
Bizjak took first place in the 1M (300.60) and 3M (262.50) diving competitions, besting Colby’s Ivan Knoepflmacher in both events. Landon Luzak (Virginia Beach, Va.) also competed for the Camels and placed third in each event.
Conn will next host Amherst College on Saturday, January 25 at 1:00 p.m.
