NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men’s soccer team returned to conference play, settling for a 1-1 draw against Colby College on Saturday afternoon from Freeman Field.
Conn started quickly earning a corner kick just ninety seconds into the contest. On the corner, Marco Perugini (Medway, Mass.) put a ball into the box, where it bounced around before falling to Matt Quiros-Newton (Alajuela, Costa Rica) on the edge. Quiros-Newton volleyed the bouncing ball into the bottom corner of the net to make it 1-0.
Colby answered right back as Jude Gussen forced a save from TJ Krongard (Montclair, N.J.). The teams traded chances for the rest of the half, with no one coming close to the next goal, as the Camels led 1-0 at the break.
Conn started the second half on the front foot, earning another corner kick, before Perugini let a shot go that was tipped by a defender before being caught by Jackson Magee. The Mules upped the pressure looking for an equalizer, but the Camels defense held strong.
Colby continued to press, earning a corner kick with just over two minutes remaining. On the ensuing corner, the ball bounced around in the box, falling to Leo Robinson who fired home to even the score. Conn nearly found the game winner in the dying seconds as a cross into the box just missed the head of Elliot Spatz (Bellevue, Wash.), as the Camels settled for the 1-1 draw.
Conn outshot Colby 7-6, including 4-2 on shots on target, while holding a 7-2 advantage on corner kicks.
Krongard got the start in goal, finishing with one save. Quiros-Newton tallied the lone goal for Conn, while Perugini, Freddie Taylor (Needham Heights, Mass.) and Max Weiss (Weston, Conn.) added one shot on goal.
Magee got the nod in net, finishing with three saves. Robinson notched the lone marker for Colby.
Conn (2-1-3, 0-1-2 NESCAC) is right back in action tomorrow afternoon taking on Tufts at 3:00 p.m. on Freeman Field.
